  • Ibo Knots

Also known as Japanese fence knots, Ibo knots are the standard in most Japanese bamboo fence construction. Following tradition, they are tied with shuronawa (palm fiber rope) that have been soaked in water, softening the rope, causing it to shrink, and ensuring a far tighter, lasting binding. Here, the black ibo knots provide contrast with the natural tone of bamboo, as with bamboo fences.

  • Madake

Madake (Phyllostachys bambusoides, or giant timber bamboo) is used for the Sirius because of its uniform width and longer node spacing, making it easier to keep the shafts dimensionally consistent. For this same reason, it is the preferred choice over Moso chiku (Phyllostachys pubescens) for fence making and bamboo craft. It is found throughout various parts of Japan from Honshu to Okinawa.

  • Bamboo Pegs

The bamboo pegs are carved from cut Sirius shaft pieces, and used to anchor main shafts to side shafts. Protruding parts are carefully removed, creating a smooth seamless appearance.

  • Bamboo x Metal

Our Sirius fixture juxtaposes organic and inorganic materials existing in perfect harmony. Bamboo’s organic nature brings zest but also irregularity to the construction, which is deftly accounted for by the design of the metal arm structure that provides durability and solidity.
